Roman Road – 3rd September, 2022

Celebrating its 40th event it was good to see this race back after the enforced COVID-19 break. The event felt like it had less pre-race prep/ information than in previous years but having already completed the last 3 events I knew the drill and what to expect. The start area is very relaxed and great camaraderie and banter within the 216 entrants who started the race

Weather conditions were good for running with most runners in club vests.

Upon the start whistle the race is flat for about 400m before a steady climb over the a470 and then undulations to the start of the old roman road and a cobbled surface climbing up through the brecon beacons. The good weather made for stunning views and after around 10k there is a nice trail descent for around a mile and then its tarmac/roads to the finish at Cyfarthfa Park in Merthyr. Whilst one of the last hills was missing this year due to roadworks you still had to run up the hill to the castle to claim your t-shirt & medal.

the post race refreshments and hospitality were as good as ever

A race definitely to consider in the future - especially if doing the Snowdonia marathon in October
